The Madestein UK company was founded in 1982 and introduced many innovations to the British market, including curly leaves lettuce at the end of the 1980s and a mix of mixed salads in 2001. Currently, they focus on the production of greenhouse lettuce and fresh basil throughout the year. In addition to traditional growing methods, Madestein UK uses sustainable cultivation methods, such as the Deep Flow hydroponic system, which uses water efficiently and minimizes the risk of groundwater contamination.

– We see a great demand for British lettuce and herbs, so we were looking for ways to increase our productivity. We were impressed by what we saw when visiting breeders in the Netherlands and Finland who use LEDs for growing lettuce. Our goal is to use LED lights to improve the quality, reduce the impact of adverse weather conditions and improve the durability of our products – says Jonathan Zwinkels from Madestein UK.

The garden has specific functions: representative, recreational and seating. In order for the garden to arouse admiration with its appearance, suitable plants must be selected, and to be able to survive there, they should have an irrigation system. It is worth investing in such a sprinkler, because we then save up to 50% less water than with manual watering and it is less labor-intensive.
The greatest water shortage is in summer. It’s not just about the heat that makes the flowers wither and the lack of rain, sometimes it happens that the soil is so dry that it hinders the penetration of water into the roots of plants.
The irrigation system is a network of pipes distributed under the surface of the ground, armed with sprinklers and electrovalves. The whole is complemented by a controller that controls the operation of the irrigation system without human intervention, taking into account the level of precipitation with the use of a drop sensor, which results in the system being shut down in the event of a rain. The selection of the installation depends on the irrigated land. Light types have better permeability than heavy soils. You should also take into account the speed of water binding in the ground and the depth at which we will water. If the sprinklers are properly selected, we will not have to worry about plants in our garden anymore.


The basic types of sprinklers are:

鈥 Micro-sprinklers – they are used for irrigation rebates and groups of bushes, they are very small, they consist of a spray head and a pin that sticks into the ground. With the irrigation line, they connect with small hoses, spray water into tiny drops, creating a mist. They are easy to assemble, use little water and can work at low pressures, but have a small range and are easy to damage.
鈥 Permanent sprinklers – for watering larger areas and lawns. They are placed in the ground. Thanks to appropriate nozzles, they can water vertebrae with a radius of up to 10 m. They also have a filter to prevent nozzles clogging. Such sprinklers are divided into pop-up and invisible ones. Wynurzalne is such, hidden under the surface of the soil, protrude upwards under the influence of water pressure, and at rest they are hidden and invisible between the grass. We distinguish high-emergent sprinklers, used in clumps of bushes and at rebates, where the nozzle rises 30 cm above the ground, and low, which is used for watering lawns, protruding only 10 cm above the ground. Non-irrigating sprinklers are those that are mounted on a rigid tube and covered with higher plants, e.g. shrubs. Due to the fact that they are quite durable and relatively cheap, they are used in home gardens, unless the sprinkler protruding slightly above the surface of the earth does not bother too much.
鈥 Mobile sprinklers have a large operating range (can be set from 0 to 360 degrees), so they are usually watered with lawns. They have two types of mechanisms that force rotation around their own axis: hammer and turbine. In rotary sprinklers with a hammer or turbine mechanism, a stream of water turns a circle or its any part, evenly spraying the area far and near.
Dripping devices – consist of a series of drip heads embedded in a polyethylene hose. They are arranged mainly along a hedge or perennial or rose rebate. You can lightly cover it with earth or bark.
Dripping Minilites – they differ from the above-mentioned dripping devices only in that you can determine the place where the water will flow out.

The operation of LED lighting is based on electroluminescence, which is the result of a combination of electrons and holes in the P-N semiconductor connectors found in LED diodes.

Semiconductor is a crystal that is made of two layers – the N layer contains electrons (negative charge) while the P layer contains so-called holes (positive charge). When the current is supplied to the semiconductor, the electrons from the N layer jump to the P layer and during this jump, the energy separated out in the form of radiation – that is, simply light – is released. In contrast to incandescent bulbs and so-called energy-saving fluorescent lamps, there is no energy loss for heat and no harmful substances for the environment. In addition, LED bulbs are 100% biodegradable.


The color of light in LED lighting depends on the type of material from which the semiconductor is made and on the distance the electrons from the N to P layer have to jump over.
Unlike other light sources that need special filters for this, LEDs produce light instantly in a specific color, making it intense and saturated.

Returning to practical reasons, you can not forget ENERGY SAVINGS. Thanks to LED diodes, you can use up to 90% less energy while maintaining current light parameters. In addition, in contrast to the so-called energy-saving fluorescent lamps, LED lighting shines with full power immediately after switching on. This is not only important for the comfort of use, but also from the point of view of energy saving. LED bulbs do not consume additional energy for warming up.


A distinctly perceptible feature is LIFE – incomparably greater than in the case of ordinary incandescent bulbs and even ‘energy-efficient’ fluorescent lamps. LED lighting shines in the same strong light stream up to 50000h without losing its efficiency. Simply put, you would exchange 30 ordinary incandescent bulbs and 6 ‘energy-saving’ compact fluorescent lamps, and at the same time only one LED bulb. What’s more – frequent switching on and off does not shorten the life of the LED, as is the case with other types of light bulbs.


ECOLOGY is not only a matter of trends and mentality. It also affects the environment and our health. In contrast to the so-called energy-saving lamps LED bulbs do not contain mercury or other substances hazardous to the environment and our environment. In addition, they are 100% biodegradable.


Finally, SAINT. Products using LED technology are much more resistant to shocks and vibrations, which in the traditional lighting cause the incandescent filaments or cracking fluorescent lamp housings. Thanks to their unique properties, LED bulbs do not heat up. The use of LED lighting therefore minimizes the risk of fire or burns to your child.

The use of such additives results from the fact that in a traditional fluorescent lamp there is gas and it must be heated to the right temperature, and in the case of LED fluorescent lamps there is no need. The LED tube should be connected directly to 230V in the extreme poles of the fluorescent lamp.

Who knows what the CRI indicator is?

When you look at bulbs or any kind of lamp, you often notice how many products have the number “CRI”, known as “Color rendering index”.

But what is “CRI” and how does its rating affect our decision when buying lighting?

CRI (Color Rendering Index) is a standard measurement of the source’s ability to reveal the colors of objects compared to a natural light source.

The highest possible CRI is 100. It is the same color as natural daylight, which is often found in incandescent / halogen bulbs.

The color of the light is defined as the correlated color temperature (CC9) and is measured in Kelvin (K). Warmer / yellow bulbs = 3500k, and cooler / more blue bulbs = 6500k.

LED color. Color temperature is a characteristic of visible light that has important applications in lighting. In practice, color temperature is meaningful only for light sources that do in fact correspond somewhat closely to the radiation of some black body, i.e., those on a line from reddish/orange via yellow and more or less white to blueish white. Color temperature is expressed in kelvins, using the symbol K, a unit of measure for absolute temperature.Color temperatures over 5000 K are called “cool colors” (bluish white), while lower color temperatures (2700鈥3000 K) are called “warm colors” (yellowish white through red).


If you like the traditional yellowish colour of a conventional lamp then warm white around (2700-3000K ) would be the ideal choice, this is the most popular choice for homes. If you want a modern, clean look, you may prefer the cleaner, brighter feel of a cool white lamp (4000K+). Cool white light contains more blue light and looks brighter
